The caring responders at the Veterans Crisis Line are specially trained and experienced in helping Veterans of all ages and circumstances. Some of the responders are Veterans themselves and understand what Veterans and their families and friends have been through and the challenges Veterans of all ages and service eras face. The Veterans Crisis Line connects Veterans in crisis and their families and friends with qualified, caring Department of Veterans Affairs responders through a confidential toll-free hotline, online chat, or text. Veterans and their loved ones can call 988 and Press 1chat online, or send a text message to 838255 to receive confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Support for deaf and hard of hearing individuals is available. In some instances, callers may experience difficulty connecting with the Veterans Crisis Line. Frontlines of Freedom is hosted by Lt. Col. Denny Gillem, U.S. Army (Retired), a highly decorated military leader. After graduating from West Point, Colonel Gillem served 22 years in the Army, first as an Airborne Ranger with two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and seven awards for valor. Gillem also served as a Mideast War Planner at MacDill AFB.

The VA Parking Lot Suicides

Veterans are taking their own lives on VA hospital campuses, a desperate form of protest against a system that they feel hasn’t helped them. 19 suicides occurred on VA campuses from October 2017 to November 2018, seven of them in parking lots, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
