Medicare Drug Coverage (Part D)

Medicare drug coverage (Part D) is optional prescription drug coverage. Medicare drug coverage (Part D) is available as a separate plan through Medicare-approved private insurance companies or as part of a Medicare-approved Medicare Advantage plan (referred to as a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan). If you decide not to get coverage when you’re first eligible and you don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage (like drug coverage from an employer or union) or get Extra Help, you’ll likely pay a late enrollment penalty if you join a plan later. Generally, you’ll pay this penalty for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage (Part D). Each plan can vary in cost and specific drugs covered.

If you have limited income and cannot afford your medications even though you receive Medicare drug coverage (Part D), you may be eligible for the Extra Help (also called the “Low Income Subsidy” program. Learn how you can qualify and apply for this program.

We encourage everyone who has Medicare Drug Coverage (either as part of a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan or as stand-alone drug coverage) to review how their plan will cover their medications for the next year. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 requires significant changes to the design of 2025 Part D plans, and it’s particularly important for Medicare beneficiaries to learn how their existing plan will work for them in 2025 and to determine if they would benefit by changing plans.
