One of my strongest values I have is my work ethic. My family instilled this at a young age. You show up early with a great attitude and you do whatever is needed of you. Customer service was always paramount and you always did the right thing. Always. This culture started at home with my father, a four-year veteran of the Marine Corp and Crash Captain for the Federal Fire Department. His father, a career in the Navy he served in World War 2 and Korea. My other great influence was my maternal grandfather, a World War 2 veteran who was a butcher and grocery man by trade worked to provide for his family, but also served his community as a business owner. These men worked hard, were leaders in their field, served their country, and were always helping others. I have a servant’s heart, but it really began to show when I started Assisted Living Locators five years ago.
My background has not always been in the senior industry or healthcare. In fact, it was pretty far removed from that world. It was horticulture and more specifically landscaping. I always thought that was where I would stay. Until my father-in-law’s diagnosis.
In the late summer/early fall of 2017, my father in law’s health was declining. The symptoms of Lewy Body Dementia worsened and the family had to make the painful decision that he could no longer be cared for in his home. With no guidance and naïve about senior resources, my family began the search for a memory care community. The very first community that they visited became m father-in-law’s new home. But it was not for long. After three months, it was obvious the community was not a good fit. Overwhelmed and stressed my family started the search for a new community. This experience of moving a loved one proved to be emotionally taxing on every level and moving twice was especially difficult. In the spring of 2018, I was introduced to Assisted Living Locators. Their model was exactly what my family needed only 6 months earlier. In June of 2018, I opened the first Assisted Living Locators in Indiana as a resource for central Indiana families.
