Reading is an adventure of the imagination and lets you unplug and unwind from your daily stressors. It also makes you a role model for your children. That’s why children, teens and adults are invited to enroll in this year’s Department of Defense-Morale, Welfare and Recreation Summer Reading Program.
Why the summer reading program?
Morale, Welfare and Recreation develops all kinds of enrichment programs to support force readiness and military community. The mission of the Department of Defense-MWR Summer Reading Program is to help families bridge the “summer learning gap” while inspiring literacy and life-long learning. The benefits of summer reading are clear:
Students who participate in the library summer reading programs score higher on reading achievements tests.
Students who read often are higher achievers than students who seldom read.
Skillful reading is one of the most important habits that leads to a successful academic career and happy, productive life.
The program’s theme this year is “It’s Showtime at Your Library.” MWR libraries will feature all types of performances, from movies and theater to puppetry, dance, poetry, videos and more. You and your child can read books and complete activities to earn prizes at your installation library.
Enroll – It’s free and easy
To get started, find your installation library and register as an individual or as a family. Keep in mind that the program timeframes vary from library to library, so signing up as soon as possible will help you to get the most out of the program. You can also contact your local installation library to learn more.
Guard or reserve? Not near an installation library?
If you’re a member of the National Guard or reserve or don’t have access to a local installation library, you can still participate in the Summer Reading Program virtually. You can also access the MWR Digital Library and get free access to eBooks, audiobooks and more.
Beyond the summer months – discover what’s in your installation library
MWR libraries offer much more than aisles of books. Check your installation library to see what events are offered, such as story hours, book discussion groups, gaming nights, movie nights, teen programs and internet access.
Free access to eBooks, audiobooks and more
Service members and families have free access to eBooks, audiobooks and more on the MWR Digital Library, so your books are portable year-round. Dive into a genre that interests you – or try them all. Looking for ways to unwind? Use the MWR Digital Library to pick out an audiobook. The digital library service is a particularly helpful benefit for those military families who may not have access to installation libraries.
