Thou I was unable to serve in the military for medical reasons, I grew up as a true Baby Boomer to a dad who served in the Pacific Theater in WW II. Like most combat veterans he did not share much of his personal experience, but I know he was in the invasion force for Guam and Okinawa.
I also had an uncle who was a bombardier on a B-24 stationed in Italy. His plan was shot down on a mission to bomb an oil storage depot. He was a POW for sixteen months. He was finally freed by General Patton’s force in Germany. I had another uncle who served the Navy in the Pacific. He piloted landing craft for troops. I had another uncle who did not serve in WW II but joined the Army in the late 50’s. He served in Iceland.
Most recent member to serve was my cousin Eddie Morton. He was a graduate of the second class at the Air Force Academy when it was in Denver. Eddie’s last assignment was in a Phantom 4 in Vietnam. His plan was shot down as he provided close air support for US Marines. Eddie is buried at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
